A crossguard lightsaber has one main blade and two short quillons venting at the emitter. The quillons exist because the kyber crystal is cracked — the excess energy has to escape somewhere, which is why the blade crackles. We build two: Kylo Ren's, and Cal Kestis's weathered V4.

The Three-Bladed Hilt

A crossguard lightsaber has one main blade and two short quillons venting sideways at the emitter. It is not a duelling refinement — it is a symptom. The crystal is cracked, the energy has nowhere to go, and the vents are what stop the hilt destroying itself.

Why it crackles

A stable kyber crystal produces a clean, steady blade. A cracked one cannot contain the energy, so the blade spits and flickers and the excess bleeds out through the quillons. Kylo Ren's saber looks unfinished because it is — and that is precisely the point of the design.

The two we build

Kylo Ren's is the hilt everyone knows: raw, industrial, red. Cal Kestis's V4 is the quieter one — a weathered crossguard from Jedi Survivor, and the only Jedi hilt on this page.

Duelling with one

Honestly, the quillons are a liability in a real fight. They catch, they get knocked, and they are the first thing to take an impact. If you intend to duel hard, an RGB board is the sensible choice — no electronics inside the blades to break.

Crossguard Lightsaber FAQs

What is a crossguard lightsaber?
One main blade with two short quillons venting sideways at the emitter. Kylo Ren's is the famous example. The quillons exist because the kyber crystal is cracked and the excess energy has to escape somewhere.
Why does a crossguard lightsaber crackle?
Because the crystal is unstable. A stable kyber crystal gives a clean blade; a cracked one cannot contain the energy, so the blade spits and flickers and the surplus vents out through the quillons.
Is a crossguard lightsaber double-bladed?
Not strictly. A double-bladed saber has a full blade at each end of the hilt. A crossguard has one main blade and two short quillons — three points of light, but one blade.
Are crossguard lightsabers good for duelling?
They are duel-ready, but the quillons take the punishment. If you duel hard, choose an RGB board — there are no electronics inside the blades to damage.
Which crossguard lightsabers do you make?
Two: Kylo Ren's, and Cal Kestis's V4 weathered crossguard from Jedi Survivor. Both are hand-assembled in our Lincolnshire workshop.
