The "master" is Sauron. The blade dates back to the War of Wrath — the catastrophic conflict at the end of the First Age in which the Valar and their allies overthrew Morgoth and cast him into the Void. During that war, Sauron served as Morgoth's lieutenant and greatest captain. The sword he wielded was a weapon of the dark forge — stainless in its design but corrupted in its purpose. After the War of Wrath, Sauron feigned repentance before going into hiding, and relics of his power were scattered across Middle-earth, hidden by his servants and awaiting his return.

The Southlands themselves are significant: in the Second Age they will eventually become Mordor — transformed by the eruption of Mount Doom triggered by the very events of Season 1. The broken sword is therefore not just a weapon but a symbol of the long shadow Sauron cast over Middle-earth millennia before the events of The Lord of the Rings.
