Legolas is a Sindarin Elf, one of the Grey Elves, the great Elven kindred who remained in Middle-earth rather than sailing to Valinor. He is the son of Thranduil, King of the Woodland Realm of Mirkwood (formally Eryn Lasgalen), and was sent to Rivendell as a messenger when Gollum escaped from the Wood-elves' custody. There he participated in the Council of Elrond and was chosen as the representative of the Elves in the Fellowship of the Ring.

As a Sindarin Elf, Legolas possesses the heightened senses, swift reflexes, and centuries of battle experience characteristic of his people. His fighting style reflects the Elven philosophy of combat: elegant, efficient, and overwhelmingly fast. His twin knives are worn on his back in individual sheaths positioned either side of his quiver — drawn in a continuous motion as he moves from archery to close quarters without pause. The blades themselves embody the Elven love of craft and natural form: organic in shape, engraved with vine motifs, carrying the flowing aesthetic of the Woodland Realm in every line.
