The Legend of Longclaw

Longclaw began its story not with Jon Snow, but with House Mormont of Bear Island — one of the oldest and most loyal bannermen of House Stark. For five centuries the sword was the ancestral blade of the Mormonts, passed from generation to generation as a symbol of the family's honour and duty. When Lord Commander Jeor Mormont left Bear Island to take the black and join the Night's Watch, he brought Longclaw with him — intending it eventually for his son and heir, Ser Jorah Mormont.

When Jorah fled Westeros in disgrace after being caught selling poachers into slavery, he left the sword behind. Ser Jeor's sister returned it to him on the Wall, and there it remained — until the night Jon Snow saved Jeor Mormont's life from a wight in the Lord Commander's own quarters. In gratitude, Jeor gifted Longclaw to Jon, and had the pommel remade: the bear of House Mormont replaced by a direwolf, the sigil of House Stark, in recognition of the young man's courage and the family he had come from.

From that moment, Longclaw became inseparable from Jon Snow's story. He carried it beyond the Wall on the great ranging, used it to slay a White Walker at Hardhome — one of the most pivotal moments in the entire series, proving that Valyrian steel could destroy the dead — and wielded it through the Battle of the Bastards, the Long Night at Winterfell, and finally against the Night King himself.
