When Lord Commander Jeor Mormont left Bear Island to take the black and join the Night's Watch, he brought Longclaw with him — intending it eventually for his son and heir, Ser Jorah Mormont.

When Jorah fled Westeros in disgrace after being caught selling poachers into slavery, he left the sword behind. Ser Jeor's sister returned it to him on the Wall, and there it remained — until the night Jon Snow saved Jeor Mormont's life from a wight in the Lord Commander's own quarters. In gratitude, Jeor gifted Longclaw to Jon, and had the pommel remade: the bear of House Mormont replaced by a direwolf, the sigil of House Stark, in recognition of the young man's courage and the family he had come from.

From that moment, Longclaw became inseparable from Jon Snow's story.
