In The Fellowship of the Ring, it is one of these blades that nearly kills Frodo on the summit of Weathertop (Amon Sûl), driven into his shoulder by the Witch-King of Angmar — the Lord of the Nine. The nine Ringwraiths were originally mortal Men of great power — kings, sorcerers, and warlords — who were given Rings of Power by Sauron during the Second Age. As they wore their rings, they grew ever more under Sauron's dominion until they faded entirely from the physical world, becoming wraiths — visible only as shadows, invisible to ordinary sight but terrifyingly present in the spirit world. They are bound utterly to Sauron's will and cannot be permanently destroyed while the One Ring exists.Herugrim's design reflects the martial culture of Rohan: a kingdom of horsemen descended from the Northmen of Rhovanion, whose aesthetic was defined by a fusion of migration-era Germanic and Anglo-Saxon influences. The blade engravings reference the runic traditions of the Rohirrim — a people who, unlike the Elves or Gondorians, did not use flowing Elvish script but carved angular, direct inscriptions into their arms and armour.
