During the Battle of the Pelennor Fields he confronted King Théoden of Rohan and mortally wounded him — only to meet his end at the hands of Éowyn of Rohan and the hobbit Meriadoc Brandybuck, fulfilling the ancient prophecy in the most unexpected way: he was not killed by a man.
