The Story Behind Oathkeeper

Oathkeeper's story begins not with Brienne of Tarth, but with the death of Ned Stark. When Tywin Lannister ordered Ice — the enormous Valyrian steel greatsword of House Stark, passed down through generations of the family — to be melted down and reforged, he had it made into two new swords. One he kept for himself. The other he gave to his son Jaime as a symbol of Lannister power and a reward for his return to King's Landing.

But Jaime Lannister, changed irrevocably by his captivity and his unlikely bond with Brienne of Tarth, had other ideas. Before Brienne left King's Landing on her mission to find and protect Sansa and Arya Stark, Jaime gave her the sword — still unnamed — along with a suit of armour, a squire, and his finest horse. It was Podrick Payne who suggested the name: Oathkeeper. A fitting tribute to the promise Jaime had made to Catelyn Stark, and the one thing in his long and complicated life that he had kept without compromise.

Brienne carried Oathkeeper throughout the remainder of the series — using it to fight the Hound in one of Game of Thrones' most brutal and memorable duels, and ultimately fulfilling her oath by finding and protecting Sansa Stark in the North. The sword passed to Brienne permanently, and in the final season she used it to knight Jaime in the great hall of Winterfell — one of the most emotionally resonant moments in the entire run of the show.

Oathkeeper is more than a Lannister sword or a Stark sword. It is a sword that passed between enemies, bound by honour, and ultimately became a symbol of the best of what both houses could be. What is Oathkeeper? Oathkeeper is a Valyrian steel longsword forged from the remains of Ned Stark's greatsword Ice. Tywin Lannister had Ice melted down and reforged into two swords — one of which Jaime Lannister gifted to Brienne of Tarth, who named it Oathkeeper in honour of the promise Jaime had made to Catelyn Stark to find and protect her daughters.

Why did Jaime Lannister give Oathkeeper to Brienne? Jaime gave Brienne Oathkeeper before she left King's Landing on her mission to find Sansa and Arya Stark — fulfilling the oath he had made to Catelyn Stark. It was an act that reflected how much Jaime had changed during his captivity and his time with Brienne, and it remains one of the most significant moments in his character arc.

What sword was Oathkeeper made from? Oathkeeper was forged from the Valyrian steel of Ice — the ancestral greatsword of House Stark, which had been in the Stark family for generations before Tywin Lannister had it melted down following Ned Stark's execution.
